On 2 April 2008, the draft Strategy for Modernisation and Qualification of the Labour Inspectorate was presented. The Strategy was produced based on the feasibility study on strengthening the capacity of the Labour Inspectorate which assessed the needs and capacity of the Labour Inspectorate. Both activities were implemented with technical assistance funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands through a Trust Fund at the World Bank established to support the implementation of crucial reforms in the several key area, including the labour market. The Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Ljupco Meshkov in his address said that the work of the Labour Inspectorate is one of the key priorities of the Government of Macedonia. This feasibility study and Strategy are highly important and their implementation should produce results that will be felt by all. The strengthening of the Labour Inspectorate should contribute to increased number of detection of informal employments that would ultimately result in revised statistic and reduced unemployment rate in the country. Stimulating overall growth and creating private sector jobs are the only long-term solutions to Macedonia’s high unemployment. The way to achieve this is by fostering a business environment more conducive to investment and formal sector job creation. Reforming labour market institutions is a fundamental part of the solution.
