Bert van Marwijk's Netherlands side are just three points away from claiming a place at the 2010 FIFA World Cup after an impressive win against FYR Macedonia in Amsterdam.

The Oranje continued where they had left off in beating Scotland 3-0 at the same stadium on Saturday, and with Wesley Sneijder's inclusion for the injured Robin van Persie the only personnel change, they quickly took the lead. The hosts' early pressure told first, after 16 minutes, when Dirk Kuyt slid in to finish from Arjen Robben's attempted shot, and then as Klaas Jan Huntelaar confirmed his own sparkling form nine minutes later. Huntelaar lobbed goalkeeper Tome Pacovski expertly after the visiting defence had harried Robben away.

Four minutes before the break, Huntelaar's Real Madrid CF team-mate Sneijder picked out Kuyt at full sprint and, after beating one defender, the forward registered with a fine shot into the far corner. Ryan Babel replaced Robben in the second period and twice tested Pacovski before the Netherlands made it 4-0 two minutes from time. Another substitute, Rafael van der Vaart, completed the rout with a turn and shot. Victory in Iceland on 6 June would ensure that the Dutch cannot be caught in Group 7. FYR Macedonia host Norway the same day.
