66th Anniversary of the Deportation of the Macedonian Jews Marked in MacedoniaThe 66 anniversary of the deportation of the Macedonian Jews was marked on 11 March in Skopje, Stip and Bitola. On the night between 10 and 11 March 1943 almost all Jews in Macedonia were arrested and placed in a temporary camp in the Tobacco Monopoly in Skopje from where they were deported to the Treblinka Camp in Poland.
On this occasion a delegation of the Macedonian Jewish Community, representatives of the Government and the diplomatic corps laid flowers at the monument of the Macedonian Jews in Skopje and visited the Butel cemetery where the Jewish prayer for the dead Kaddish was sung. Later on the same day a commemorative event was held in the Macedonian National Theatre.
It is estimated that over 900 thousand people, out of which 750.000 were Jews, had been executed in Treblinka. Holocaust victims in that camp, which is located 100 kilometers northeast of Warsaw, were slain between July 1942 and October 1943.
