They say: If there's no solution, there's no problem. Thus, the art of lobbing and negotiating is to find a solution of the
problem. The training “How to operate in Brussels” organised by the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ from June 16th to June 27th 2008 in Den Haag fulfilled its aim. It taught us to find solutions and to resolve
problems systematically. On our way towards the fully-fledged membership in the European Union, resolving problems
systematically is the most desired skill. Participation in the training course „How to operate in Brussels“ is an excellent
opportunity for the civil servants to gain the necessary practical and theoretical knowledge of protecting country's national interest simultaneously with the EU interest in the the highly demanding EU accession process. In our opinion, the Republic of Macedonia needs not only to protect the national interests in the process of EU integration, but also to
persuade the Macedonian citizens that EU integration is our national interest and that this process requires changing the system of perception, reforms, legal adjustments and moving forward towards an integrated EU society. The above-mentioned can be achieved only through educational upgrading of all parties involved in the EU processes including the civil servants as one of the leading chain in our EU integration. Nevertheless, this training contributed towards broadening the scope of our knowledge regarding EU related processes and established a highly valued network among the civil servants from the region. We would like to use this opportunity to express our utmost gratitude to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dutch Embassy in Republic of Macedonia and the Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ for the excellent organization of the training and for providing us with a precious experience and knowledge which will be useful for our future professional work.
