Five million trees were planted on 14 March on different locations in Macedonia as a continuation of the campaign “Tree Day – Plant Your Future” which started in 2008. On 12 March 2008 the Macedonian citizens planted 2 million and on 19 November 2008 6 million trees in one day.

Members of the Government and the diplomatic corps, representatives of the non-governmental sector and citizens joined the campaign and planted a tree for their future – one for each citizen in Macedonia. The remaining three million trees were planted by the public enterprise “Macedonian Forests”.

Together with Foreign Minister Antonio Milošoski, Ambassador Simone Filippini supported the action by planting trees on Kamnik near Skopje. In her statement for the media Ambassador Filippini emphasised the importance of raising the awareness for the environmental issues: “I believe that this campaign is a great way of raising the awareness of the Macedonian people about the beauty of their own country. I hope that it will not end with planting the trees and that the citizens will take care of them and stop littering everywhere”.

The campaign was initiated by the opera singer Boris Trajanov and supported by the Government, the Association of Local Self-government Units and the NGO sector.
